Willy De Geyndt began his lifelong career in global health, teaching public health courses at the University of Minnesota, acquiring multilingual skills, and consulting for the Pan American Health Organization of the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). Later, he was recruited by the World Bank, where, in 1982, he joined the division covering Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East. In 1989 he transferred to the East Asia and Pacific region and remained there until his retirement, in 1997. After retiring from the World Bank, he returned to academia.

The book traces the genesis of Bank health work from the first loan to China in 1981 to help finance medical education for 13 universities
