A joint presentation by the History Thematic Group and WBG Library
Panelists:
Eveline Herfkens and Ruth Jacoby, former Executive Directors, and Alex Shakow, Executive Secretary, Development Committee and Deputy Secretary of the World Bank.
Moderator: Chuck Ziegler, Chair of History Thematic Group
The period covered was a particularly exciting time in the history of the World Bank, with the largest influx of new members since the decolonization period in Africa, what with the demise of the Soviet Union and the resulting accession of its former republics to membership in both the World Bank and the IMF.
Topics to be covered include improving the Bank’s poverty focus; the value of mixed constituencies; representing new members; the relationship international financial institutions with the UN/the Philadelphia Group; and Board-management relations, including the move to discussing Country Assistance Strategies instead of projects; the creation of CODE; and the independence of OED, reporting to the Board, not management.
A Q & A session will follow the discussion.
