Once a thriving port and commercial center in Virginia during colonial times, Alexandria is today a highly diversified multipolar urban area of about 155,000 inhabitants right at the heart of the Washington DC metropolis. Urban mobility is a complex and essential challenge for the city government, affecting, economic development, environmental and social conditions, patterns of urban growth, and the citizens’ quality of life. The presentation will cover (i) the overall context (location of population and activities, mobility demand, supply of transport services and infrastructure, key issues, etc), (ii) a discussion of priorities for action and investment, (iii) an overview of the institutional framework for managing urban mobility, and (iv) a few key projects, like the BRT and the bike lanes network.
About the Speaker:
Chris Ziemann is an international urban and transport specialist focused on sustainable mobility, having worked and studied in the US, Brazil, Bolivia, Senegal and Germany. He has been working in local governments for the last 15 years, implementing BRT, NMT, mobility plans, and coordinating on local governance issues. Most recently he’s been heading up the Transport Planning office in Alexandria, implementing high-profile projects like BRT, Vision Zero, and the City’s Mobility Plan. He was a Robert Bosch Foundation fellow in Hamburg, Germany, the Chicago BRT Project Manager, led Washington DC’s first cycle track project, and interned at the Urbanisação de Curitiba, Brazil. Mr. Ziemann holds a Master’s of Regional Planning in Transportation Planning from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
