Energy Thematic Group Event
Synopsis: China emits more greenhouse gas emissions than the US and the EU combined, and burns more coal than the rest of the world combined. But China is also building more solar and wind power than the rest of the world combined, and manufactures 80% of solar PV, 70% of battery, and 60% of EV in the world. China is committed to reaching carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Thanks to the exponential growth in renewable energy in recent years, China will achieve its 2030 NDC target of 1200 GW of solar and wind by 2025, five years ahead of time. China could also reach early peaking at a lower level. However, given the energy security concerns and power shortage, China is also building many coal power plants. This presentation will update China’s energy development, discuss the challenges of energy transition, and lay out decarbonization pathways to reach net zero by 2060.
Speaker: Xiaodong Wang, Lead Energy Specialist and Infrastructure Program Leader for China, Mongolia, and Korea, World Bank
