Cities, Slums, and COVID: What Have We Learned?

This presentation is a continuation of the Urban & Water TG’s “Talk Shop” series.

During this session, the speakers will share what we have learned about risks to the population, approaches to addressing the pandemic and some of the priorities cities will need to consider as they attempt to build back better. The session will include a particular focus on COVID’s impact on those living in slums and how governments and NGOs have innovated to address this vulnerable population.

Presenters’ Bio:
Sameh Wahba is the Global Director for the World Bank’s Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience, and Land Global Practice. The Practice has over $30bn in lending commitments and 400 staff. Mr Wahba holds a Ph.D. in urban planning from Harvard University and has 25 years’ experience in urban development, land, housing, disaster risk management, infrastructure, and sustainable development.

Judy Baker is a Global Co-Lead for the Global Solutions Group on Urban Poverty, Inclusive Cities and Housing and Lead Economist for the Africa Urban Team. She has worked extensively across the World Bank on projects and analytical work, on topics related to urbanization and its impacts, urban poverty, slum upgrading, service delivery, affordable housing, climate change, and impact evaluation. She has published six books, as well as produced numerous country and regional reports.
