Deepa will introduce the key messages and highlights from her latest book Chup: Breaking the Silence About India’s Women, which is based on 600 interviews with educated city women and some men in India. Following the presentation, Deepa will join a multicultural panel discussing the cultural habits and underlying gender attitudes highlighted in the book. The panel will reflect on the similarities and differences between the persistent challenges faced by women across cultures despite the gains in economic empowerment.
About the Speaker:
Deepa Narayan is a former Senior Advisor in the office of the vice president of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network where she led the 15-country study entitled Moving Out of Poverty: Understanding Freedom, Democracy and Growth from the Bottom Up, examining how people create wealth to escape poverty. Deepa has authored many books on participation, empowerment and poverty. Her best-known work is the three-volume series Voices of the Poor, based on the multi-country Consultations with the Poor project undertaken for the World Development Report (WDR) 2000/2001: Attacking Poverty. More recently she has been researching perspectives of women and men on gender in India.
